What is Topical Finasteride?

Currently, two FDA approved medications are used to treat Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) or hereditary hair loss: Oral Finasteride and Topical Minoxidil. Finasteride is primarily prescribed for men to treat AGA by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts Testosterone (T) into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the main hormone responsible for hair thinning in patients with AGA.
However, many men are concerned about and wish to avoid the side effects associated with this medication, such as decreased libido, gynecomastia, or even depression. These side effects can be quite troubling, leading to the establishment of Post Finasteride Syndrome support groups in various countries.
Due to these side effect concerns, as well as the desire to avoid long term medication use, research has focused on developing topical Finasteride. Studies have shown that topical Finasteride is as effective as oral medication when applied correctly in terms of dosage and application method. Moreover, no adverse side effects have been observed with topical use similar to those seen with oral Finasteride. Research also indicates that combining topical Finasteride with Minoxidil yields better results than using either medication alone.
Topical Finasteride presents an alternative option for men with hereditary hair loss who are unable or unwilling to take oral medication, providing effective treatment with potentially fewer side effects.
Advantages of Topical Finasteride
- Can treat hereditary hair loss without the need for oral medication
- No worries about side effects from the medication
- Easy to use simply apply to the affected area in appropriate amounts
- Suitable for both men and postmenopausal women
- Hair becomes thicker and regains its fullness

Topical Finasteride is suitable for?
- Those who do not want to take hair growth medications orally
- People experiencing hair thinning who want thicker hair, especially those with hereditary hair loss
- Both men and women
- Those who want to restore thicker hair but are afraid of hair transplant procedures
